A major Side effect for painkillers!

Everyone is aware of the fact that medications taken on a daily basis can have side effects. When the medications have a beneficial side that outweighs their side effects, they are a necessity. When they are not needed much and patients start taking them on a daily basis with no prescription, they become the “destroyer candy”!

A recent study published by the Harvard Medical School showed that ibuprofen and acetaminophen can contribute to hearing problems. Men and women who were taking these painkillers more than twice a week had at least a 20% increase in the risk of hearing loss. As a matter of fact, ibuprofen, such as Advil and Motrin can decrease blood flow to the cochlea, which leads to the damaging and death of its cells. From another angle, the cochlea is usually protected by the antioxidant “glutathione”. The routine use of acetaminophen, such as Panadol and Tylenol, can deplete this antioxidant. This will damage the cochlea.

This study is not meant to scare people from these great painkillers; however, you should consult your doctor if you are planning to make them a daily routine!!!
